All shooting instruction courses include a classroom component, as well as one or more live-fire sections conducted separately at a gun range.
Intended primarily for new handgun owners or those who may be considering the purchase of a handgun, this course provides basic firearm instruction, as well as responsibility and safety training. The NRA FIRST Steps Pistol course provides a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific pistol action type (revolver or semi-automatic handgun). Class size is limited to six or fewer students. Students are responsible for individual range fees and should bring their own firearms. If available, students may opt to use a firearm provided by the instructor.
No live ammunition is allowed in the classroom at any time.
This course is three to four hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific pistol action type (either semi-automatic or revolver, but not both). Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; the particular pistol model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and a FIRST Steps Course completion certificate.
This class teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely. The course is at least 8 hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot both revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students are responsible for individual range fees and are expected to bring their own pistol(s) and purchase at least 50 rounds of ammunition. Class size is limited to six or fewer students. If available, students may opt to use a firearm provided by the instructor.
No live ammunition is allowed in the classroom at any time.
Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; parts and operation for semi-automatic pistols and revolvers; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position and two handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. All students will take a Basics of Pistol Shooting written examination and will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and a course completion certificate.
*Florida Concealed Weapon/Firearm License
Completion of either the FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation or the Basic Pistol Course meets the training requirement for Florida Concealed Weapon/Firearm License applicants as specified under Florida Statutes Section 790.06(2)(h)2. Please note that the National Rifle Association (NRA) does not promote, endorse, or sponsor training courses specifically for the Florida Concealed Weapon/Firearm License.
This is a non-shooting course that teaches students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in the home. Four hours of instruction for safe gun handling are conducted in the classroom only. Class size is generally limited to 12 or fewer participants, although arrangements can be made for larger groups.
No live ammunition is allowed in the classroom at any time.
Students are taught NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling; primary causes of firearm accidents; firearm parts; how to unload certain action types (using "dummy" ammunition only); ammunition components; cleaning; care; safe storage of firearms in the home; and the benefits of becoming an active participant in the shooting sports. Students will receive the NRA Home Firearm Safety handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Basic Firearm Training Program brochure, and a course completion certificate. This course does not include live fire training at the gun range. Approximately half of U.S. households have at least one gun in the home. Even if your house has no guns or they are always securely locked away and unloaded, guns may be accessible at the homes of your child's playmates or your relatives. As with swimming pools, matches, household poison, and electricity, firearms are a fact of everyday life. It makes sense to help children be prepared.
NRA Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program Fee: FREE
This is a safety course designed by the NRA for children from pre-K through third grade and teaches them what to do if they find a gun (STOP! Don't Touch! Leave the Area. Tell an Adult). The purpose of the Eddie Eagle Program is not to teach whether guns are good or bad or to encourage NRA membership, but instead to promote child safety and accident prevention. No firearms are used in the program, nor does the program make any value judgments about firearms. The Eddie Eagle character is never shown handling a firearm. More information about the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program is available at the NRA website.
